Full Description:
Course Aim:
To raise the standard of safety awareness of personnel working in the port industry to some of the specific hazards to their health and safety that arise in ports and docks, and how these may be controlled.
Background:
Our ports and docks handle large volumes of both hazardous and non hazardous cargoes involving a wide range of handling equipment, mobile plant and machinery, different employers and contractors, ships and their crews. They are inherently hazardous work places, presenting a wide range of health and safety challenges to those who work there.
Methodology:
A practical and highly participative approach will be used throughout.
Any theoretical material used will be related to relevant situations and tasks
encountered by personnel while working in a typical port environment.The
focus will be on actual situations with realistic risk control measures.
Course Objectives:
On completion of the course the learner will:
1. Have a basic understanding of Health and safety at Work legislation and relevant codes of practice.
2. Know the obligations of both employer and employees at work.
3. Be able to define the terms ‘hazard’,’ risk’ and ‘risk controls’ and explain the importance of risk assessment
4. Be able to carry out a basic risk assessment of a typical port and docks work environment,
5. Be able to identify and implement the appropriate risk control measures required for the hazards identified.
6. Understand basic requirements regarding environmental protection and port security.
7. Have the opportunity to obtain an attendance certificate confirming their attendance at a formal course in port specific health and safety training.
