B.Sc (Honours) Degree in Nautical Science through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
The Academic Council of Cork Institute of Technology has approved a process of recognition of prior learning with respect to the Degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Nautical Science.
There are two routes available to students applying for recognition towards this award.
1. Students who commenced the Chief Mate / Master 3000+ GT course on or after 1 September 1999.
Students who completed STCW 95 compliant subjects offered by CIT/NMCI leading to the Department of Transport Certificate of Competency for Chief Mate / Master (over 3000 GT) are eligible to apply for recognition of these subjects as satisfying in part the requirements leading to the award of a BSc (Honours) Degree in Nautical Science.
Students who wish to receive recognition of their prior learning as outlined above should:
(a) Apply to the National Maritime College of Ireland (contact details are given below).
(b) Complete the appropriate application form.
(c) Provide an original transcript of results from the Chief Mate / Master 3000 + GT course undertaken at CIT/NMCI.
(d) Provide an original certificate of the Ordinary Degree or Diploma in Nautical Science or equivalent.
(e) Pay the required fee of €800.
Applicants will have to complete a Research Dissertation module and may have to complete some assignments for other modules. Such work will be supervised by NMCI lecturers and will be specified after receipt of the application form. Successful completion of these requirements will provide the student with the requirements for the full award.
2. Students who commenced courses at Cork Institute of Technology prior to 1 September 1999.
Students who completed the Chief Mates or Deck Officer Class 2 and Deck Officer Class 1 courses prior to 1 September 1999 may also apply to undergo a process of recognition of prior learning. Under the current CIT Regulations, such applicants may receive up to a maximum of 35% credit for previous subjects/modules passed. Applicants should write to the address below requesting to be considered for RPL.
