With over one million square kilometres of sea area over which Ireland has sovereign rights, the State has the largest maritime to land ratio of any EU member state. Despite this the contribution to its GDP from the Maritime sector, at around 1%, is the lowest of any EU member state along the Euro Atlantic rim. There is an onus on all institutions with a stake in the maritime sector to look at all opportunities for the sustainable development of Ireland's maritime resource.

With the government's drive towards the development of the "Smart" economy it is important that the National Maritime College of Ireland is firmly established as a centre of excellence in Irish Maritime affairs and seafarer technical and professional development.

To this end the college integrates Research, Developement and Innovation into everything it does. The implementation of the Research, Development and Innovation Strategy is playing a vital role in enhancing the attractiveness of NMCI and complements the other pillars of the NMCI.
