Certificate in Port and Offshore Energy Operations Management

Programme overview

There is a significant demand for specialized training in port and offshore energy operations as
emphasised by numerous Irish, European and International reports. The Irish
government has committed to spending 100 billion euros by 2050 as Ireland pushes for a target
of 37GW of offshore wind energy production. Estimates indicate that this will result in 12,000
– 15,000 additional jobs to Irelands maritime economy. This will be in addition to the 32,000
workers currently employed within Irelands maritime economy. Potential learners include
professionals currently working in maritime and offshore sectors who seek to enhance their
skills, as well as recent graduates in maritime studies, engineering, and related fields. The
NMCI's strong industry connections and reputation for excellence in maritime education will
attract a diverse cohort of learners eager to advance their careers.

The subsidised cost of this programme is €450 from €850

Entry Criteria:

Merit or better in a relevant Diploma course (Level 7) or equivalent. The University’s policy in relation to recognition of prior learning (RPL) applies. Completion of this special purpose award does not provide entry to the MSc in Maritime Operations. Candidates must satisfy the entry criteria outlined in the MSc program document.

Delivery Mechanisms and Assessment

The programme will be delivered predominantly online, supplemented with 2-3 in-person
tutorials and networking opportunities which take place on Saturdays. The blended delivery
model ensures flexibility for working professionals while maintaining high engagement levels
through interactive online sessions. Assessments will include written reports, project work, and
presentations to ensure comprehensive evaluation of learners’ understanding and application of
course content.

Programme Structure

The blended programme will be delivered in Semester 1 of each year. It will follow the MTU
academic calendar. There will typically be 12 teaching weeks (2 hr lecture and 5 hr independent
study time per module), 1 study week and an exams week in a semester cycle. The two modules
both use continuous assessment mechanisms. Each module has two assessments.
Brief overview of the two modules

1. Port Operations Management (5 Credits)
• Role of ports in international trade
• Port business rationale
• Legal aspects of port management
• Port development policy

2. Offshore Renewable Energy Project Management (5 Credits)
• Overview of offshore renewable energy
• EU and Irish context for energy and decarbonisation
• Stakeholders and generation technologies
• Policies and financial models
• Maritime logistics lifecycle of ORE projects

Programme Outcomes

1. Upon successful completion of this programme, the graduate will be able to demonstrate a
comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles of port operations and offshore
energy management, including the legal frameworks, policies, and environmental
considerations that influence these sectors.

2. Upon successful completion of this programme, the graduate will be able to demonstrate
the ability to effectively apply advanced operational and project management skills in realworld scenarios, including the planning, coordination, and management of port operations
and offshore renewable energy projects.

3. Upon successful completion of this programme, the graduate will be able to demonstrate
the capability to lead and manage multidisciplinary teams, make strategic decisions, and
solve complex problems within the dynamic contexts of port and offshore energy
operations, ensuring compliance with industry standards and best practices.

The programme outcomes align with Level 8 of the National Framework of Qualifications
(NFQ), emphasizing advanced knowledge, skills, and competencies in port and offshore energy
operations. The curriculum is designed to ensure graduates can apply theoretical concepts to
practical challenges, demonstrating high levels of critical thinking and problem-solving
abilities. The three programme outcomes have been mapped to the MTU Award Standard –
Science level 8 Mapping Document.

Award

The Certificate in Port and Offshore Energy Operations Management complements existing
programmes offered by NMCI, namely: The Master of Science in Global Sustainable Supply
Chain Management and the new Master of Science in Maritime Operations. The two modules
that make up this certificate/micro-credential are contained within both Masters’ programmes.
While the primary focus of the new certificate is to provide a specialized focus on port and
offshore energy operations, filling a critical gap in the current educational offerings. It may
also encourage prospective students to continue their studies in MTU and enrol on one of the
previously mentioned Masters’ programmes.
